ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews the concept of recreational activity packages and the fact that behavior at a recreation site is dependent on a visitor’s definition of the site as a locale for various recreational activities. The importance of water in the provision and enhancement of wildland recreation opportunities has been noted by both researchers and managers. The particular patterns of participation in various recreational activities may also hold significant implications for managers of wildland water-based resources. The set of activities in which the visiting group engages at a water-based recreation area may be termed an activity package. Researchers concerned with recreation activity participation have become more and more cognizant of the activity package concept. First, researchers employing factor and cluster analysis methods generally use frequencies of participation of a particular population or sample in recreational activities to form the resulting groupings.
