ABSTRACT

In those parts which Alpheus, 1 a swift river that rushes down from the high grottos, bathes with his waters, my father was born, almost at mid point between its source and the aid. And although he was plebeian, he devoted himself to the leisure of nobles, and left the occupation of his father, who had been constant in the service of Minerva. 2 He begot me on the clear waters nearby from a nymph of Corythus, who was as garrulous as the daughters of Pierus, 3 and who lived in these parts; and he gave me to the naiads of the surrounding places to nourish.
