ABSTRACT

“When I had impressed all this upon my memory, I was no longer able to look at them, and I lowered my eyes and gazed again at the green fields; and there, just as Helen could have been seen over the dead Paris, so Venus appeared to me. Sitting upon the green grass, the goddess held in her right hand the loose reins of a horse standing there, and a shield and a lance in her left. She appeared close to tears (if the divine eyes could cry), and she was gazing at a youth before her, all covered with splendid armor, who seemed to be lying there lifeless.
