ABSTRACT

There are many other theories of personality that are holistic in nature. This chapter reviews the ideas of some of these minor holistic theories. Some are minor because the theories are not detailed enough to present a comprehensive theory of the structure of the mind. Gordon Allport noted that the most important fact about personality was that it had a relatively enduring and unique organization, and the critical question concerned its structure and composition. Personality is organized, but it is constantly evolving and changing, and hence, dynamic. Personality is unstructured at birth, which in some sense implies unity, but it is also unorganized. Allport used the term proprium for the core self. Allport noted that an environment that places few demands on a person makes it easier to develop an integrated unified personality. Kurt Goldstein proposed a theory of personality based upon his experience with the behavior and rehabilitation of brain-damaged patients.
