ABSTRACT

Around the Sabbath dinner tables of the fighting family there were emotional discussions about the movement's fearful deterioration in the wake of the flood of political appointments. The veterans could not understand how, having reached the point where they were finally supposed to be able to rest and enjoy the fruits of their labor, they were now in danger of being thrown out of their political home. The recruitment began with the Likud list for the eleventh Knesset, in which veterans who concluded their political career were once again replaced with other veterans. Unlike Begin, Shamir was very eager to have the heirs in the Knesset. He believed in their power, their abilities, and their professionalism, and in contrast to his charismatic and eloquent predecessor, he needed them for dealing with the media. Shamir also worked to place heirs in his outer circle: the government and the Knesset.
