ABSTRACT

Opposition to the Oslo Accords was the only issue that succeeded in uniting the feuding camps within the Likud. For the first time since Benny Begin's departure, three generations within the Likud stood side by side, united in their struggle. The generational change of leadership was put to the test at a critical moment, and the new guard turned out to be firm and strong. The heirs opposed the Oslo Accords from day one and issued sharply worded warnings that the move would lead to a terror state in the heart of the country. The Likud leadership was united in its opposition to Oslo, although the approaches differed. Ariel Sharon was the most extreme and outspoken critic. He assailed his former friend Prime Minister Rabin, and Peres too. While the IDF was pulling out of Jericho and Gaza, as required under the terms of the Oslo Accords, suicide terrorists were being dispatched to Jewish population centers in Israel.
