ABSTRACT

This chapter examines present-day factors that have influenced inclusive practices with an emphasis on developments in schools and sporting clubs. The impact of mandated federal and state policies and the implementation of the National Disability Strategy 2010–2020 enabled a more inclusive approach to the design of policies, programmes and infrastructure. However, despite educational policy mandates providing a framework for inclusion, teachers, schools and education institutions continue to face challenges in achieving inclusion. Community and cultural attitudes to disability, overt or subtle, also serve as a barrier to participation in physical education or sporting activities. Despite these issues there is a positive commitment to inclusive practice and culture and examples of local and state-based sporting organizations that have partnered with schools to provide inclusive physical activity experiences and training are highlighted. A culture of inclusion is developing across sectors.
