ABSTRACT
This chapter explores several questions that arise when we consider the process and potential of implementing democratic innovations in today’s democracies. Namely, what are some of the democratic tensions that come into play when innovations are pursued? What are the unintended – as opposed to intended – consequences of democratic innovations? What expectations do the promises of innovations create and can they be filled? Will citizens participate in an innovative democratic landscape? Who has agency in the process of innovation? Bringing together the contributions to this volume, it highlights the complexity of innovations, the interplay between institutions and environments and the importance of group and individual agency.
