ABSTRACT

During the 80s, night club culture had been flowering in England. House music has followed a similar route. In the late 80s and early 90s, aspects of it have become part of the popular music idiom, while certain mutations have established themselves for different specialist audiences. Mark also played a set at the legendary Mud Club in London, which in 1984 presented a mixture of rare groove and rockabilly to its audience. Unlike in American cities such as Chicago, Detroit or New York, licensed radio stations in England are not as accessible to marginal cultural groups. Therefore, these groups have been forced to ‘hi-jack’ the air waves in order to be able to communicate their cultural realm. The popularity of house music was gaining momentum at the end of 1987 and the beginning of 1988. New compilation series like Jack Trax were showing a budding underground scene.
