ABSTRACT

This chapter examines a number of topics that are relevant for this book. There are four sections in this chapter. The first section addresses the different types of human rights and China’s emphasis on economic rights. The second section two focuses on several different explanatory dimensions: (1) Asian values; (2) sovereignty; and (3) economic sanctions and (4) naming and shaming. Then, the third section puts forth the main explanation of the book, which uses rational choice theory to argue that the Chinese government acts in a manner to advance its preferences, which are based on the role of the perceived threat level to the CCP. The final section examines the sources that are used in the book.
