ABSTRACT

In this book, rational choice has been used to explain China’s actions in the UNGA regarding human rights resolutions, for China acts on human rights in the UNGA according to its perceived threat levels to CCP rule. Contrary to what Chinese government officials and others posit concerning China’s supposed respect for state sovereignty and non-interference, China is selective about country-specific human rights issues, as revealed by China’s UNGA voting and the statements that it has issued in the UNGA. Put differently, China is willing to admonish certain states on human rights issues. The implications of the book’s findings are discussed here by focusing on the recent issue of mass detention of Uyghurs and other Muslims in Xinjiang.
