ABSTRACT

Civilian spouses of military members often face unique challenges. Efforts are warranted to develop or tailor interventions and initiatives that foster fitness and resiliency among civilian spouses, who represent central figures in the meso or organizational level triad of the military member, family, and work organization. A focus on spouse fitness and its relationship to resiliency is particularly appropriate in the context of the challenges that contemporary life poses for military families, including challenging duty requirements, frequent deployments, periodic relocation, and the general stress inherent to military duties and associated service life. This study presents and validates an instrument for measuring the domains of mental, physical, social, and spiritual civilian-spouse fitness.
