ABSTRACT

Women writers began their journey in the world of belles-lettres since ancient times. There were many women who contributed to the development of sciences and religious literature in the Middle Ages, but their names are unknown, also because these women worked anonymously in monasteries throughout Europe. Self-knowledge, humility, and patience were important traits for the women’s movement and advancement in society. There was a clear necessity in shifting gender roles at the end of the 19th century rather than a pure fashionable trend or a temporary inclination. The fin de siecle was a favorable time for women who wanted to think independently and alter their lifestyle. Women collectively realized themselves as active historical agents and participants; and the collective movement usually takes place when discontent prevails in society. Societies were forced to develop and adapt their way of thinking to contemporary trends.
