ABSTRACT

As he left Hatchards, Hatry’s health broke down. After a prolonged period in hospital, he tried to return to his former business. He acquired two coffee shops but proved only that he did not have the management skills which were enabling Charles Forte to turn selling coffee into a fortune. He then spent some years advising a listed company on making money through company acquisitions. After achieving some success in this role, he was obliged to withdraw when journalists uncovered his involvement. With his son Cecil he then turned to building combines of cleaning and knitwear companies.

When he died penniless in 1965, he was still working.
