ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the assumption that role-play sits within the domain of early childhood and presents a view of role-play beyond the early years home corner. It also presents the role-play as a key teaching tool suitable for learners of all ages and stages of development. In educational terms, role-play is often thought of as a pedagogic tool within the domain of early childhood education and care; an element of play reserved for the youngest children in our education systems. The role of the teacher in mediating role-play for children beyond their early years offers the capacity to support delivery of experience across the curriculum. The application of such pedagogical principles beyond early childhood education and care, to a realm of education which is ordinarily more didactic and formal, is not without issue.
