ABSTRACT

The UN Commission on Sustainable Development produced a set of sustainable development indicators with international agreement. In An indicator should be chosen that would enable decision-making in an objective manner. The attribute should be unique and not covered in other indicators. The causal framework examines the relationship between indicators to enable prediction of policy responses. Domain-based indicators of concern for sustainability are along the lines of environment, society, and economy such as waste generation and water use. Many companies use claims of greenness or sustainability by using one or few indicators. As one of the pillars of sustainability is social, then aspects related to this must be included in any sustainability assessment. Different groups have examined what social impacts should be included in sustainability assessments. For the chemical industry, the Institute for Sustainability of the AIChE has developed a Sustainability Index to quantify sustainability aspects. Economic sustainability is a very important element of sustainable development.
