ABSTRACT

The chapter challenges the stereotype of boy band fans as young, female and hysterical by interrogating the discourses of teen pop to show that critiques of their behaviour uphold patriarchal concerns. A range of creative and assertive fan texts and practices are explored to counter stereotypes of passivity and manipulation. The diverse nature of the audience for boy bands is also revealed through analysis of the involvement of LGBT, straight male and mature adult fans who are often ignored in the discourses surrounding mainstream pop fandom.
