ABSTRACT

The main objective of the integrated task analysis (ITA) project is to establish a baseline reference for the evolution of air traffic controller tasks and jobs through the development and the application of a generic set of ITA methods. It includes a cognitive interview, behavioural observations, a flight progress reconstruction method and supplementary methods evaluating stress and strain at work.

This paper presents the results of the cognitive interviews and the flight progress reconstructions conducted with 36 air traffic controllers in five en-route control centres in Europe.

The data analysis was conducted in a qualitative way. The answers of the controllers were grouped together and made into short stories which verbally described how air traffic controllers do their job. They were then summarised in flow diagrams.

Five task processes, four sub-processes and one control process were identified.
