Virtue design

WithPhilippe d’Anjou

As a being with rationality, the designer is then an agent capable of developing, achieving, and cultivating virtue in design practice. Such virtue-based design ethics is analyzed within the scope of the philosophical tradition of virtue ethics, including Aristotle’s ethical theory and the modern and contemporary ideas of Nietzsche and MacIntyre. Such conceptualization of design ethics and the virtuous character designers can achieve are put into relation with contemporary issues, such as unsustainability, that stem from the current instrumental and aesthetic design practice ideology.
