ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with the tendency by analysing two emblematic examples in the field of performative theatre: MDLSX interpreted by Silvia Calderoni and Bestie di scena directed by Emma Dante. The body is intrinsically and inseparably bound up with human consciousness, the consciousness that knows, judges and loves — in short, establishes meaning. The performers live on the stage and share with the audience an experience of the body that becomes a metaphor of an anthropological and political prospect. Silvia Calderoni is a mercurial performer of immense energy, precision and absolute rigour, courageous, generous and even severe in presenting herself on the stage without exhibitionism or morbidity. The performance drew inspiration from a best-selling novel by the American author of Greek descent Jeffrey Eugenides: Middlesex, winner of the Pulitzer Prize in 2003.
