ABSTRACT

Don Pedro de Henao lived between the two ethnic groups and two worlds, the traditional Andean and the colonial. This chapter examines don Pedro’s voyage to Spain. It describes his voyage in the context of the colonial culture, which, according to Joanne Rappaport and Tom Cummins, comprised multicultural, complex, heterogeneous, and fluid social formations. The sources are mostly silent on Don Pedro own experiences during his voyage, but they are very revealing on how he wanted to present himself in Spain and how he pursued his interests. The chapter focuses on his agency as an indigenous lord and his interaction with both Spanish and indigenous peoples during his stay in Spain. Don Pedro appeared at the royal court for the first time in autumn of 1583. Don Pedro probably returned to Madrid in July 1584, and in August, he was back at the royal court where the king reissued the decrees he had given the year before.
