ABSTRACT

Workstations are purposeful opportunities to practice academically rigorous, engaging, standard-based “just right” math activities. A workstation is a space for students to practice what they are learning and what they are supposed to know. The purpose of the workstation is for students to make sense of the math that they are learning. Levelled workstations are about getting students to work in a scaffolded manner so that they can have a firm foundation and reach grade level standards. Levelled workstations are about giving students the opportunity and the time needed to learn and own the mathematical ideas they are working with. Workstations can be done as part of a math workshop or they can be done as part of a regular math program that is not in a workshop format. Either way, the purpose of math workstations is for the students to have an opportunity to do purposeful, meaningful, independent practice.
