ABSTRACT

Word problems have a hierarchy. The word problem workstations should be clearly scaffolded from easy to more difficult around what the students have to know by the end of their grade. In the first part of the second grade use word problem bags when reviewing the first grade types of problems, the progression should be from easy numbers within 10 to numbers within 20 and then 100. Students should record their thinking on the different recording sheets shown throughout the chapter. Students should have their own word problem folder where they can keep their ongoing work. Levelled word problem workstations help to scaffold student access to word problems. The types of word problems and the grade level at which they are introduced is in every state’s core standards. Students should go step by step and master the levels in order when they are practicing.
