ABSTRACT

We ask a lot of our teachers. They need to teach state mandated courses of study with innovative, scaffolded, and engaging lessons. We want them to individualize their instruction and remain mindful of the variety of accommodations that their students need. We want them to prepare their students to excel at high stakes, standardized tests. We expect them to form meaningful relationships with the students in their class. We ask them to communicate regularly with the parents and engage them in a meaningful way in their child’s education. We ask them to teach “character” to their students and instill in them a sense of pride, integrity, kindness, empathy, and good work ethic. We ask them to give up their planning time to collaborate with their professional learning community. We ask them to stay late for faculty meetings and various committee assignments. We ask them to show patience and compassion toward some of the most challenging students imaginable. And we want them to show 79good school spirit – always bringing a positive attitude to work every day.
