ABSTRACT

One thing that the renewal of psychoanalysis requires is to get past the unitary mind-set that has, in the past, led to regarding psychological and pharmacological interventions as mutually exclusive choices in the treatment of serious pathologies. An important international association that organically and systematically considers the psychoanalytic treatment of psychoses is the International Society for the Psychological Treatment of Schizophrenia and Other Psychoses—now called International Society for Psychological and Social Approaches to Psychosis. The thinking defect that is characteristic of psychosis so extensively damages the barrier between the unconscious and the conscious that this barrier does not manage to function appropriately, with the consequent risk of hallucinations, delirium and confusion. A brief mention is reserved for the problems related to pharmacological treatment of psychotic disturbances and its integration in the analytical process. This chapter presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the book.
