ABSTRACT

This chapter is a revised and enlarged version of an article published in 1976 which deals with the place which modern Hebrew language and literature occupied at the Hebrew Union College (HUC)—Jewish Institute of Religion during the first century of its history. During the early years of the HUC, no instruction in either modern Hebrew literature or language formed part of the curriculum. Only shortly before Wise's death in 1900, were courses in Hebrew literature introduced because of the attitudes of Moses Mielziner who served as interim president of the HUC between 1901 and 1903 and his confidant Gotthard Deutsch. The author further says that the general articles on Hebrew literature are fewer. Jacob Marcus reviewed Abraham Waldstein's Evolution of Modern Hebrew Literature. Israel Harburg discussed The Struggle for Reform as reflected in Modern Hebrew Literature'; and Gotthard Deutsch, 'America in Haskalah Literature'.
