ABSTRACT

The teaching of Buddhism is not unique in having problems, but some of the problems in teaching Buddhism are unique: no God, no soul, and no immortal heaven (or hell). In a letter to the Times Educational Supplement in 1974 one correspondent stated the belief that religion begins with God. There have been several definitions of ‘religion’ in the history of the study of religions, and most of them would seem to take this or a similar stance. The ‘deliverance of the mind’ is the ultimate goal of Buddhism called Nibbana. However, there is little else that can be said on this subject, and what is said should, strictly speaking, be in the form of negatives since no words can even begin to describe Nibbana; and this is where a problem might present itself for some teachers.
