ABSTRACT

If the changes now taking place in religious education are as successful as I would wish them to be, one result might be that my children or, more likely, my grandchildren will be taught about Christianity by a Jew or a Muslim. This is something far removed from the present situation in which the teacher is likely to be a Christian but may be someone of no commitment at all. As Muslims and Jews in Britain are aware, the crunch comes when their children are taught any beliefs by a member of an alien faith—and I use the word ‘alien’ intentionally to suggest the tension which exists, though in our arrogance many Christian teachers in multi-faith schools have acted with a complete disregard of it.
