ABSTRACT

There are many types of anxiety, and with each comes a wide range of characteristics and symptoms. This chapter focuses on trauma and stressor-related disorders; obsessive-compulsive disorders; and specific anxiety disorders, such as panic disorders, social anxiety disorders, anticipatory grief, separation anxiety disorder, selective mutism, generalized anxiety disorder, test anxiety, and overachievers. The chapter provides an overview of the characteristics of each and explains the implications for teachers working with the students within their classroom. The chapter provides an array of practical teaching strategies and unique ways to reduce anxiety through the creation of a calm box with a variety of sensory objects that bring peace. In addition, creative activities guide students to shift their focus from what they cannot do to the things they can do.
