ABSTRACT

The folding is the first operation the modern binder has to consider, and, if the books are supplied in large quantities from the printer, each signature will be in a separate parcel and the peculiarities of each sheet will first be noted by making up a sample copy. The register in machine-folding is obtained by setting the sheets to the edge of the paper, a point that has to be taken into consideration by the printer in the first instance, if accurate registration is to result. In machine-made papers whenever practicable, the fibres, which run all one way, should be so folded as to go right across the back to obtain the maximum of strength. The folder is held in the right hand while the sheet is drawn over with the left from right to left side without creasing the paper; the print of the two pages thus facing each other must exactly register.
