ABSTRACT

In the original make-up of the book the text matter is planned, and the plates simply inserted in their proper places according to the text, and it sometimes happens that the weight and bulk of the plates are in excess of that of the section in which they are generally tipped. If the modern binder’s work consisted of binding together only well constructed sections, his task would be fairly simple. Assuming the book to be an octavo, the first stitch is made at a distance of a quarter of an inch from the tail, and a full eighth of an inch from the back, working downwards. In the case of plates that read lengthwise, the reading is placed to the right-hand side that is the plates facing even numbers should have the top of the plates at the back of the book, and those facing odd numbers the top at the fore-edge.
