ABSTRACT

In the late 1700s, Immanuel Kant provided the following definition of enlightenment: Enlightenment is release from his self-incurred tutelage. Tutelage is man’s inability to make use of his understanding without directions from another. Self-incurred is the tutelage when its cause lies not in lack of reason but in lack of resolution and courage to use it without direction from another. Complex adaptive systems, is a model that is better aligned with the fast-paced, unpredictable context we all live in and work in. Organization, also a complex adaptive system, needs to be managed to take advantage of nonlinearity and emergence that are characteristic of these systems. By approaching culture change using the characteristics of complex adaptive systems where the butterfly effect is accepted, focused groups working on solving real problems with the support and guidance of the leader, can actually make change very quickly.
