ABSTRACT
THE next eight desert marches brought us into the I district once dominated by the powerful Tanguts. Marco Polo, in describing his travels in these parts, relates that the fertility of the soil and the abundance of the cattle rendered the people independent of trading; but now, six hundred years later, this same country is a sea of sand whose heaven-aspiring waves surge right up to the territory of the Ordos Mongols.
