This chapter explores the affordances of place making, mapping, neighborhood walking and environmental design in our Culturally Sustaining Systemic Functional Linguistics (CS SFL) programs. Within this approach to youth programs, design is conceptualized as the process in which resources and patterns from multiple modes are made available to youth to creatively remix new meanings for their social, civic and academic purposes. We see such contributions of new knowledge to our society are as a key civic right of all citizens.
