ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The chapters broadly discuss from simpler to more complex in terms of the activities themselves and the concepts that define and describe the different genres. Many of the activities within each chapter can be used in most of the genres. The authors have tried to pick genres that children will enjoy, so you can either take the ‘genre route’ or encourage children to write a ghost story, a fantasy story, a science fiction story etc. Finally, as well as aiming to offer practical activities, we wanted to communicate something of the attitude and attributes required to evolve as a writer. These include determination, a willingness to learn and work hard, resilience in dealing with frustrations and setbacks but most of all an appreciation of the great pleasure and satisfaction to be found in turning thoughts and feelings into words on the page that other people can also enjoy.
