ABSTRACT

Optimization is, according to Merriam-Webster, an act, process, or methodology of making something (as a design, system, or decision) as perfect, functional or effective as possible. Modern optimization methods perform shape optimizations on components generated from a computer-aided design (CAD) tool. In most textbooks, minimization of an objective function instead of maximization is conducted for optimization. However, there are some references which use the maximization of an objective function. There are many types of optimization problems such as continuous, discrete, constrained, unconstrained, and sometimes even a binary (Y/N) problems, which can also be used for optimization. The positive clamping sequence is the order in which clamps should be applied to the work part so that it does not detach from the locators. To determine this order, the work part is only under the influence of its body forces, and the current clamps are applied one by one with their previously found clamping force.
