ABSTRACT

The more the interior became dwarfed, the greater was the glamour of Calcutta. In this situation the logic of urbanization became irresistible. This chapter reflects on how the new fort was raised. The office of the Governor General was made into an institution in 1773, and Calcutta became the seat of an Empire that was slowly emerging from this city, the invincible garrison town that had given security to the trade of the Company. This chapter details how Calcutta as a city staged this breakthrough to emerge are the undisputed urban centre of colonial power.
