ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we will first present the basic terminology and definitions used in consultation, followed by the consultation stages and steps and the procedures for establishing a consultative relationship. We review some of the extant literature on the characteristics of effective consultants, and also discuss the role of technology in consultation. We also discuss the process of communication in consultative relationships. We will review social power and social influence in school consultation. Then, we will discuss the role of teachers in the consultative process, and offer recommendations to expand consultative training to teachers, as consultees, as well as to discuss the issue of intervention acceptability.
