ABSTRACT

A 29-year-old woman attended her general practitioner and explained that she wanted to plan a pregnancy. Her past medical history is significant for epilepsy. Her epilepsy had been poorly controlled during her teenage years but had been relatively stable for 10 years on sodium valproate. She experienced a tonic-clonic seizure approximately 2–3 times per year. Her regular medications were sodium valproate 600 mg BD and the combined oral contraceptive pill. She worked as an illustrator and lived with her partner. She did not drink alcohol and had never smoked.
