ABSTRACT

A 30-year-old man was brought to hospital with generalised tonic clonic seizures. The seizure had commenced 5 min earlier and he had already received treatment with intravenous lorazepam (4 mg) and was given 5 mg diazepam intravenously upon arrival to the emergency department. There was evidence of tongue biting and he had been incontinent of urine. The patient was accompanied by his partner who reported that he had a known history of epilepsy, for which he usually took levetiracetam 500 mg BD. He worked as a civil servant and lived with his partner. He did not smoke cigarettes, drank approximately 5–6 units of alcohol per week and did not use recreational drugs.
