ABSTRACT

A 27-year-old man was brought to hospital with a painful left leg. He had noticed increasing pain and swelling over his left thigh for several days. He had been feeling feverish and became lightheaded when he attempted to stand up. He had no significant past medical history and took no regular medications. The patient was a current intravenous drug user and injected heroin several times daily, with his left groin being his favoured injection site. He did not drink alcohol and did not use other recreational drugs. He had no fixed abode and usually sleeps in a hostel.
