ABSTRACT

A 60-year-old man attended his general practitioner to discuss results of recent blood tests. He had initially attended for a routine review 6 months earlier after reaching 60 years of age, and was noted to have an elevated body mass index at that point. He had since attempted to improve his diet by eating more fruit and vegetables and had also joined a gym. He reported feeling generally well and had not experienced any illnesses over the past few months. He had no past medical history aside from a previous knee injury and he took no regular medications. He worked as a stone sawyer, drank 4–6 units of alcohol per week and had recently stopped smoking.
