ABSTRACT

A 90-year-old man is brought to hospital by his son who has become concerned that his father is intermittently drowsy and difficult to rouse. He has noticed his father falling asleep during conversations and he has spilt hot drinks over himself on several occasions. The patient agrees that he has experienced excessive somnolence over recent weeks and he attributes this to a change in his medications one month earlier. The patient is unsure of his regular medications but denies having any allergies. He lives alone, does not drink alcohol and is an ex-smoker with a 30-pack year history.
