ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the background that led to the writing of this book. The author presents a personal story about her own journey through the struggles, challenges and eventual victory her own daughters found in their path toward understanding and managing their learning disabilities. The author explains the fact that students with learning disabilities and related disorders are far less likely to find success in college than are their peers without learning disabilities and explores the connection between learning disabilities, school counselling and college retention. Through her own experiences in guiding her own daughters, her background in special education and her role as a school counselor, the author explains the need for the information and comprehensive program contained in this book.
