ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author outlines what kinds of skills students with learning disabilities and related disorders will require in order to be successful in college. The author discusses the concept of college readiness in relation to students with learning disabilities and outlines how these skills are different for these students than they may be for their peers without learning disabilities. The author delineates specific skills that these students will need. These skills are the ability to ask for academic help, the ability to understand their learning needs and study styles, an understanding of the difference between accommodations and modifications, an understanding of their disability, an understanding of how to study, organization and self-motivation, an ability to self-advocate and an understanding of the difference between an IEP and a 504. The author points out that all of these skills are necessary for preparation for college-level studies. In addition, the author provides a relevant case study for counselors to get a clearer image of their role in these skills.
