ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author discusses IEPs and what counselors need to understand about these documents. The author explores the IEP in relation to the counselor’s role. The author discusses how a better understanding of the process of identification for special education in conjunction with a better understanding of how to read an IEP quickly and effectively can lead to a more comprehensive understanding of the student and their needs. The chapter outlines several methods of identification. The author also highlights important sections for counselors to take note of in an IEP, such as the modifications and accommodations section, narratives about the student and test score results. The chapter provides counselors with a knowledge base about interpreting and understanding psychological and educational testing and specific tests of achievement and aptitude including the WISC-V and the Woodcock–Johnson Test of Achievement.
