ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an introduction to the subsequent information about learning disabilities and related disorders. The author presents a narrative about a student who struggles in math and is subsequently diagnosed with dyscalculia, a math disability. The author shows how her knowledge about the disability was imperative in getting the student the help that was needed in order for him to find success. The author points out that school counselors need to have a knowledge base about learning disabilities and related disorders in order to be effective in their positions and to help children with these disorders find success in high school and beyond.
