ABSTRACT

Charles Fourier must be one of the earliest writers to give consideration to the place of sex in education. The provision of ample opportunities for recreation, education, service and work for the community is sufficient, in Fourier’s opinion, to prevent a premature interest in sex. For all his insight, Fourier has no real contribution to make to the theory or practice of sexual education. Fourier is aware of the difficulties that others will have in following his revelations and partly to allay their fears he invites them to imagine that he is describing the love life of adolescents of another planet. Fourier believed that men are by nature promiscuous and that women are not intended for marriage. Fourier recognizes love as an important passion and motivator in human activity. Fourier argues that the coming together of large numbers of people during the industrial campaigns will bring the different classes closer together and create social harmony.
