ABSTRACT

Are you an exercise physiologist? The answer to the question may be YES. But, as strange as it sounds, why are exercise physiologists so slow to separate themselves from sports medicine and exercise science. It is imperative that exercise physiologists disconnect from their history with physical education, sports training, and human performance. Also, they must grasp the significance of teaching and believing in something better for their students and for the profession of exercise physiology. For certain, academic exercise physiologists must exist for more than just to feed their students to physical therapy! But, of course, reality hits home here as well. If you are an academic exercise physiologist, why not dare to think differently? Parents want to know what their sons and daughters are learning and how it contributes to credible career opportunities after college. Why not be bold and demonstrate ownership of exercise physiology, regardless of the department name. After all, exercise physiologists have a destiny to fulfill. They have mountains to climb and professional horizons to explore. Put on a happy face, a new attitude, and be in control of your battles. Mediocrity is not the norm for exercise physiologists. Board Certified Exercise Physiologists understand this thinking. They do their best whether anyone is watching or not. They do not settle for less.
