ABSTRACT

Clients and patients with non-communicable chronic diseases complain of muscular aches, pain, and shortness of breath that are associated with difficulty at work and at home. The practice of exercise medicine is a major part of the ASEP exercise physiology vision with the expectation of helping clients live with less pain and disability. Board Certified Exercise Physiologists have the academic training to exercise ethical judgment within their scope of practice. They are healthcare professionals responsible for helping clients and patients incorporate exercise medicine into their daily routines. ASEP exercise physiologists can be fitness instructors or personal trainers, but first they are healthcare professionals with a shared scientific education, ethical standards, and unique professional hands-on laboratory skills to prescribe exercise medicine to clients and patients of all ages. ASEP is a young organization, the leadership created the first-ever professional infrastructure to promote exercise physiology professionalism and entrepreneurship. They understand that exercise is the magic exercise medicine every person needs to empower the mind, to strengthen the skeletal system, and to prevent coronary heart disease and some cancers. When compared to the exercise pill, a person who engages in regular exercise will demonstrate a lower resting and exercise heart rate with a higher stroke volume, which means the heart needs less oxygen to pump the required blood volume (i.e., cardiac output) to the peripheral tissues. Aside from the exercise training effect of a greater oxygen extraction by the muscles, regular exercise increases the size (hypertrophy), strength, and endurance of the muscular system.
